A wonky print almost always comes down to one wrong setting. Here's how to print shower game sheets on US Letter without the guesswork: load 8.5 x 11 inch paper, open the PDF and pick US Letter as the paper size.

Set scaling to "Actual size" or 100% for Letter files, or "Fit" only for A4 files.

Then print one test page, check the margins and print the full set. Use cardstock for cards and plain paper for quizzes.

Printing game sheets sounds like the easiest job on the shower to-do list.

Then the Bingo grid prints slightly off-center. The last line of the quiz vanishes. Or your phone sends everything to the wrong tray.

Most of those headaches come from three settings: paper size, scaling and paper type.

In this guide you'll find:

  • the exact dimensions of US Letter and A4
  • which scaling setting to pick
  • how to print from an iPhone or Android phone
  • what to ask for at a print shop
  • which paper weight to use for cards
  • how to cut cleanly and plan copies for your guest count

US Letter vs A4: the exact numbers

A US Letter size sheet of paper is 8.5 x 11 inches. It's the standard for home printers, copy paper and office supplies in the United States and Canada.

A4 is the standard in most other countries.

The two feel almost identical in your hand. But the small difference is enough to crop a border or push a grid off the page.

Where it is standardUnited States, Canada, parts of Latin AmericaMost other countries

The practical takeaway? Letter is a little wider and noticeably shorter than A4.

Print an A4 design on Letter paper at 100% and you lose about 17.6 mm (roughly 0.7 inch) of height, split between top and bottom. That's usually where page titles, footers and the last row of a quiz sit.

What "300 dpi" means for game sheets

Dots per inch describes how much detail a file carries at its printed size. A US Letter print at 300 dpi needs an image of 2550 x 3300 pixels to look crisp.

Making your own sheet in an image editor? Start with a canvas that size.

At 150 dpi (1275 x 1650 px), text still reads fine, but thin lines and small fonts look softer.

Most game PDFs use text that stays sharp at any size, so this mainly matters for photo-based designs.

Check your US Letter PDF before you print

Before you print 25 copies, take 60 seconds to check the file.

Open the US Letter PDF on a computer if you can. Desktop viewers show more detail than phones.

  1. Check the page size. In most PDF viewers, open Document Properties or File Info. You should see 8.5 x 11 in, 215.9 x 279.4 mm, or 612 x 792 points (a point is 1/72 of an inch). If it says 210 x 297 mm or 595 x 842 points, the file is A4.
  2. Count the pages. Note which are player sheets, which are answer keys and which are signs or instructions. You don't want 25 copies of the answer key.
  3. Look at the edges. Designs with color right to the edge (called full bleed) will show a thin white border on most home printers. That's normal.
  4. Look for cut lines. Card pages often show thin gray lines or corner marks where you should cut. They only line up if you print at 100%.

Jot the page numbers you need on a sticky note. Something like "pages 3-4 x 25, page 5 x 1, page 6 x 12 on cardstock."

It saves a lot of guessing at the printer.

Scaling: "Actual size" vs "Fit"

One setting causes most printing problems: scaling.

Every print dialog has some version of it. The names just differ between programs and devices.

Setting nameWhat it doesUse it whenWatch out for
Actual size / 100% / NonePrints the page at its true dimensionsThe PDF is US Letter and your paper is US LetterContent inside the printer's unprintable edge may be clipped
Fit / Fit to page / Scale to fitShrinks or enlarges the page to fill the printable areaThe PDF is A4 and your paper is Letter, or the reverseEverything shrinks a few percent; cut lines no longer match standard measurements
Shrink oversized pagesShrinks only pages bigger than the paper; leaves others aloneA mixed file where some pages are largerTiny shrinkage you may not notice until cards are cut
Custom scale (%)Prints at the percentage you typeFine-tuning after a test pageEasy to leave on by accident for the next job

Which one to pick

  • US Letter PDF on US Letter paper: choose Actual size or 100%. Bingo squares, card sizes and cut lines stay exactly as designed.
  • A4 PDF on US Letter paper: choose Fit. The page prints at about 94% of its size, which keeps the whole design on the page.
  • US Letter PDF on A4 paper (if you're printing abroad): choose Fit. The page prints at about 97% with extra white space top and bottom.
  • A page that loses its outer edge at 100%: try Fit or a custom scale of 97% for that page only.

If a PDF has cut lines for cards, print at 100% whenever the paper size matches.

Here's why. A card that should be 4.25 x 5.5 inches comes out closer to 4.1 x 5.3 inches at 97%. That matters if your paper trimmer has fixed guide marks.

How to print shower game sheets on US Letter from a computer

These US Letter print settings work in most computer print dialogs. Menu names vary a little between programs.

  1. Load the paper. Put plain US Letter paper in the main tray. Fan the stack first so sheets don't stick together.
  2. Open the print dialog. Use Print in your PDF viewer rather than the browser tab, if you can. Dedicated PDF viewers usually give you more scaling control.
  3. Choose the printer. Make sure the right one's selected, especially on a shared home network.
  4. Set the paper size to US Letter. Look under Page Setup, Paper, or More settings.
  5. Set scaling. Actual size or 100% for Letter files; Fit for A4 files.
  6. Select the pages. Type a range such as 3-4 so you don't print the whole file.
  7. Print one test copy. Check it against the checklist below.
  8. Set copies and collation. Enter the number of copies and turn on Collate for multi-page sets.
  9. Print the full batch. Stay near the printer for the first few sheets to catch jams.

Test page checklist

  • All four margins visible, with no text cut off at the bottom.
  • Bingo grid square, not stretched.
  • Fonts readable for older guests at arm's length.
  • Colors not streaky; if they are, run the printer's cleaning cycle once.
  • Cut lines where you expect them; measure one card with a ruler.

How to print from an iPhone or iPad

Lots of hosts get the file by email and never open a laptop. That's fine.

You can print straight from an iPhone or iPad if your printer supports AirPrint. Most current home wireless printers do.

  1. Save the PDF to Files. Open the attachment or download, tap the Share icon and choose Save to Files. That makes it easy to find again.
  2. Open the PDF in Files. Tap it to preview.
  3. Tap Share, then Print. Don't see Print? Scroll down the share sheet.
  4. Select your printer. Your phone and printer must be on the same Wi-Fi network.
  5. Set the range and copies. Choose the pages you need and the number of copies.
  6. Check the paper size, if shown. Depending on your printer, you may see a paper size option; choose US Letter. If none appears, the printer uses whatever paper is in its tray.
  7. Tap Print. Print one copy first, check it, then repeat with the full number.

iPhone and iPad print options are simpler than a computer's. Most set the scale automatically to fit the printable area.

So if your cut lines have to be exact, a computer or a print shop gives you more control.

How to print from an Android phone

Android prints through a built-in print service. Many printer makers offer a free plugin that adds their printers to the list.

  1. Open the PDF. Use your file manager or a PDF viewer.
  2. Open the menu and choose Print. It's usually under the three-dot menu or the Share button.
  3. Select a printer. Tap the printer name at the top. If yours is missing, choose All printers and add it, or install your printer maker's print plugin.
  4. Set Paper size to US Letter. Tap the small arrow to expand the options.
  5. Set Copies and Pages. Change Pages from All to a range if you only need part of the file.
  6. Tap the print icon. Print one test copy, then the full batch.

If the preview shows the wrong size, change Paper size before you tap print.

Android usually fits the page to the paper you pick. An A4 file will shrink a little onto Letter paper, just like the Fit setting on a computer.

Printing at a print shop or office store

Got 30 or more guests, cardstock or color pages? A print shop can be faster than home printing and not much pricier than ink.

Most office supply stores and local print shops take files by email, upload or USB drive.

What to tell the shop

  • "US Letter, 8.5 x 11, print at 100%, no scaling."
  • "Pages 3 and 4, 25 copies each, on plain white paper."
  • "Page 6, 12 copies on white cardstock, about 80 lb cover weight."
  • "Single-sided" or "double-sided," depending on the file.
  • "Please print one proof first." Check it at the counter before they run the full job.

Costs vary a lot by location and store, so ask for a quote.

As a rough guide, black-and-white copies on plain paper usually cost far less per sheet than color on cardstock.

Some shops will also cut cards on a guillotine for a small extra fee. That can save you an evening with scissors.

If it's a paid printable, keep the receipt or the licence text on your phone. Staff sometimes ask whether you have permission to print a design.

Paper weight for game sheets and cards

US Letter sheets come in very different weights.

Plain copy paper is right for quizzes guests fill in at a table. Cards that guests hold, stand up or keep deserve something sturdier.

PaperApproximate weightBest forGood to know
Standard copy paper20 lb bond, about 75 gsmQuizzes, word searches, scramblesCheapest; fine for single-use sheets
Premium paper24 to 32 lb bond, about 90 to 120 gsmColor game sheets, answer keysLess show-through, brighter colors
Light cardstock65 lb cover, about 176 gsmBingo cards, advice cardsHandles well in most home printers
Medium cardstock80 lb cover, about 216 gsmTable signs, keepsake cardsCheck your printer's maximum paper weight first
Heavy cardstock100 lb cover and up, about 270 gsm and upStanding signs, place cardsOften too thick for home printers; use a print shop

These conversions are approximate. Paper brands label weights slightly differently.

Before buying cardstock, look up your printer's maximum paper weight in its manual or settings.

Use the rear or manual feed tray if there is one. A straighter paper path handles thick paper better.

Printer settings for cardstock

  • Set Paper type to Cardstock, Heavy or Thick paper so the printer slows down and uses the right heat or ink amount.
  • Load 10 to 20 sheets at a time, not a full stack.
  • Let inkjet prints dry for a few minutes before stacking, or the ink may smudge.
  • Choose matte cardstock if guests will write on it; glossy surfaces can smear ballpoint pen ink.

Cutting guides for cards and small sheets

Lots of game files fit two or four cards on one page. A US Letter sheet divides neatly into these common sizes:

  • Half sheet: 5.5 x 8.5 inches, two per page. Good for small quizzes and scorecards.
  • Quarter sheet: 4.25 x 5.5 inches, four per page. Good for advice cards and small Bingo cards.
  • Standard index card size: 3 x 5 inches. Fits three per page with trimming waste.

How to cut cleanly

  1. Print at 100%. Only then will the cut lines measure what the designer intended.
  2. Use a paper trimmer if you can. A basic sliding trimmer costs roughly $15 to $30. It cuts straighter and faster than scissors.
  3. Cut the long line first. For quarter sheets, cut the sheet in half across the 11-inch side, then cut each half.
  4. Stack no more than three or four sheets at once. Thicker stacks drift, especially cardstock.
  5. Trim inside the line. Cutting just inside a gray cut line hides it completely.
  6. Set aside time. Plan on about 20 to 30 minutes to cut 60 quarter-sheet cards with a trimmer. Longer with scissors.

Some printers add a slightly wider margin on one side. Then the cut lines may sit a millimeter or two off-center.

Measure from the printed cut line, not the paper edge.

Printing multiple copies: how many US Letter sheets you need

Plan copies around your guest count, then add spares.

Late arrivals, spilled drinks and the one guest who wants a second try all eat up sheets.

GuestsQuiz sheets (one per guest + spares)Bingo cardsAdvice cards (four per sheet)Estimated US Letter sheets
101212 different cards12 cards = 3 sheetsAbout 30 to 35

303434 different cards36 cards = 9 sheetsAbout 80 to 95
404545 different cards44 cards = 11 sheetsAbout 105 to 120

The last column assumes two quiz-style games plus Bingo printed one card per sheet, advice cards four to a sheet, and a few answer keys and signs.

Adjust it for your own plan.

Copy settings that save time

  • Collate: turn it on for multi-page sets so each guest's pages come out together.
  • Double-sided: handy for a quiz with questions on the front and a tie-breaker on the back. Only use it if your printer does it automatically and the paper's thick enough not to show through.
  • Print in batches of 10 to 20: check a sheet from each batch for fading or streaks.
  • Bingo cards: each guest needs a different card, so print a range of pages once each, not one page many times.

Mixing printed sheets with free browser games

Knowing how to print shower game sheets on US Letter is useful. But you don't have to print everything.

Some games work just as well on phones or a TV, and that cuts the printing job in half.

  • Bingo: the free Bridal Shower Bingo browser game gives each guest a randomized 5x5 card on their own device. Its Print card button opens your browser's print dialog if you want a paper copy of the current card. Cards are randomized, but unique cards across guests aren't guaranteed.
  • Word games: the Wedding Word Search is an untimed 10-word puzzle. The Wedding Word Scramble runs a 60-second round with hints. Both work on a phone with nothing to print.
  • Trivia: the free Bridal Shower Trivia game has 41 multiple-choice questions. Put it up on a TV or laptop the whole room can see. You'll only need a printed score sheet for teams.

A mix works well. Print the sheets guests keep or write on at tables, and run quick timed games on screens.

Prefer a fixed printed set? The Bridal Shower Kit on this site is a one-time $24 purchase of US Letter PDFs: a 32-page game book, 60 Bingo cards and five hosting sheets.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Leaving scaling on Fit for a Letter file. Cards shrink a few percent and stop matching the cut lines.
  2. Printing an A4 file at 100% on Letter paper. The top and bottom get clipped, often losing a title or the last question.
  3. Skipping the test page. One sheet catches wrong sizes, faded ink and missing margins before you waste 30.
  4. Printing Bingo as 25 copies of one page. Every guest then has the same card.
  5. Using cardstock your printer can't handle. Check the maximum weight first, or use a print shop.
  6. Printing the answer key 25 times. Note page ranges before you print.
  7. Running out of ink the night before. Print at least three days ahead so there's time for a store run.
  8. Stacking wet inkjet cardstock. Let it dry to avoid smudges.
  9. Cutting thick stacks with scissors. Cut three or four sheets at a time, ideally on a trimmer.

Frequently asked questions

Many hosts print straight from their phones, so this doubles as an FAQ on printing US Letter PDFs from a mobile device for a shower.

What is the US Letter print size in inches, millimeters and pixels?

US Letter is 8.5 x 11 inches, which equals 215.9 x 279.4 millimeters. At 300 dots per inch, a full-page image is 2550 x 3300 pixels; at 150 dpi it's 1275 x 1650 pixels. PDF software may also list it as 612 x 792 points. A4, by comparison, is 210 x 297 millimeters.

Can I print an A4 game sheet on US Letter paper?

Yes. Choose Fit, Fit to page or Scale to fit in the print dialog, and the page shrinks to about 94% so everything fits. The design stays readable, but cards come out slightly smaller than intended and cut lines won't match standard measurements. If there's a US Letter version of the file, download that instead.

Should I choose "Actual size" or "Fit" for a US Letter PDF?

Choose Actual size, 100% or no scaling when the PDF is US Letter and so is your paper. That keeps Bingo grids square and card sizes exact. Use Fit only when the file and paper sizes differ, or if your printer clips an edge at 100%. Reset the setting afterward so the next job isn't scaled by mistake.

How do I print a US Letter PDF from my iPhone?

Save the PDF to the Files app, open it, tap Share and choose Print. Select an AirPrint printer on the same Wi-Fi network, choose the page range and number of copies, and pick US Letter if a paper size option appears. Print one test page first. For exact card sizes, a computer or print shop gives you more control.

How do I print a US Letter PDF from an Android phone?

Open the PDF, choose Print from the menu or Share button and select your printer. Expand the options to set Paper size to US Letter, then set copies and a page range. If your printer isn't listed, add it under All printers or install the printer maker's free print plugin. Print one test copy before the full batch.

What paper should I use for US Letter sheets that guests keep?

Use light cardstock around 65 lb cover, about 176 gsm, for Bingo and advice cards, and plain 20 to 24 lb paper for quizzes guests fill in and toss. Choose matte cardstock so pens don't smear. Check your printer's maximum paper weight, set the paper type to cardstock and feed 10 to 20 sheets at a time.

How many US Letter sheets do I need for 20 guests?

For two quiz-style games and Bingo, plan on about 55 to 65 sheets: around 23 of each quiz, 23 different Bingo cards, six sheets of advice cards at four per page, plus answer keys and a sign or two. Buy at least a 100-sheet pack of plain paper and a small pack of cardstock for test pages and mistakes.

How far ahead should I print shower game sheets?

Print a test page about a week before the shower and the full batch at least three days ahead. That leaves time to fix a scaling problem, buy more ink or paper, cut cards and pack them by table. Keep a few blank spares and a pen in your host bag for late guests on the day.
